antique afghan tribal belt

£125.00

antique afghan kuchi tribal belt

late 19th to early 20th century. handmade by kuchi silversmiths using heavy, irregular silver chains, built to carry weight and to move. the belt is made up of linked strands with hanging domes, bells, stamped plaques and tear-shaped pendants, all designed to shift & sound when worn.

set with turquoise and red agate stones in thick, uneven bezels. the stones aren’t decorative choices:

  • turquoise for protection,

  • red agate for vitality and strength.

there is oxidation throughout and soft wear to the silver, especially on the hanging elements and chain links, it’s consistent with long-term wear against fabric and skin. the patina is honest. it hasn’t been over-cleaned or restored.

this would have been worn ceremonially at weddings, festivals, rites of passage.

over 100 years old.

length: 85–90 cm
